What is Moringa?

Moringa is a plant from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and the tropics. Almost all parts of the plant are used to make Ayurvedic medicines.

Moringa is relatively fast, cheap, and easy to grow! This is a truly multipurpose power plant. This is because the pods can be prepared like green beans to be eaten, the seeds can be roasted like beans, while the leaves can be cooked like spinach or brewed to make tea. The leaves can also be powdered to make spice, and the oil can also be extracted from the seeds!

You can see moringa as a plant that keeps on giving!

It is rich in antioxidants, amino acids, and vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6 and C. It is also rich in folate, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus and zinc.

These are all beneficial ingredients when taken internally and when applied to the hair and scalp!

What are the Benefits of Moringa Powder for Natural Hair

1. It is a natural cleanser:

Moringa powder when used as a tea (or even as moringa oil) can be used to remove dirt from the hair and scalp gently. This makes it a gentle cleanser for naturally brittle hair.

2. Moringa powder strengthens:

Moringa powder is rich in calcium and amino acids, by-products of protein. Amino acids are also good for cell regeneration, neither on the scalp nor along the strands. These amino acids work to rebuild the cells of protein and keratin that are depleted along the hair strands, strengthening them.

3. Fights dandruff:

The antioxidant properties of moringa make it an excellent ingredient for fighting dandruff and other forms of scalp irritation. Therefore, moringa provides a healthy enough scalp for healthy hair growth.

4. Moringa powder promotes healthy new growth:

As explained in this post, Moringa powder is rich in zinc, which supports healthy hair growth. It is also rich in omega-3 fatty acids and iron which moisturize the scalp and increase blood flow to the hair follicles.

How Moringa Powder Can Be Used for Natural Hair

1. As Moringa Oil:

You can make moringa oil by following our tips on incorporating any herb into your oil. This will involve letting the moringa herb soak into the carrier oil. You can also extract the oil from the whole moringa seed. For more details, see this video:

Massage this oil into your scalp, or use it on your strands as step "O" of your LOC or LCO method to lock moisture in your hair.

2. As a tea spray or tea rinse:

Add one tablespoon of moringa powder to 1 cup of hot water for a healthy hair routine and allow it to cool. Strain the concoction, and pour the tea into a spray bottle for easy use.

You can spray this tea on your strands when your hair needs strength. You can also spray it on your scalp to combat excessive shedding or hair loss. Moringa works like green tea in this way, and you can read more about how rinsing the tea stops excess discharge here.

After washing, you can also pour this tea all over your hair and scalp immediately. Please leave it in your hair for a few minutes before rinsing and following up with a deep conditioner.

3. As a hair mask:

You can also make moringa a part of your Ayurvedic hair care routine by making a hair mask from the powder. Add about ¼ cup of moringa to ½ cup of aloe vera gel/aloe vera juice and ¼ cup of avocado or coconut oil. This will make an excellent strengthening hair mask for your natural hair.

4. As hair shines:

This is my favorite way to use moringa (and most other herbs). You can add three tablespoons of moringa to your regular hair conditioner. You can also toss in honey for its humectant properties and oil for added conditioning and slippage.
